Why Would I Need to Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

There are several reasons why a dentist may advise wisdom tooth extractions, and this includes the following:

  • Impaction (rubbing against neighboring teeth)
  • Partially erupted teeth
  • Infection
  • Gum disease
  • Overcrowding

Not every patient needs to have these teeth taken out; sometimes, they will fit comfortably in the mouth. However, it’s wise to speak with a dentist in Toronto and have them evaluate your smile. They can provide personalized treatment recommendations and explain what’s involved so you feel prepared and reassured.

The Steps Involved

Wisdom tooth extraction is surgical, meaning more invasive measures are frequently required to remove the tooth from its socket. At Bayview Dental Centre, we’ll provide local anesthesia to prevent you from feeling pain and thoroughly numb the area. Incisions are made in the surrounding gum tissue to better access the tooth. If needed, the tooth will be broken down into smaller components that are easier to extract. Once the socket is empty, it is disinfected and may be sealed with stitches. Gauze is placed over top of the site to manage bleeding.

It’s normal to experience some swelling and tenderness after your procedure. Take Advil or Tylenol to help with this. Don’t consume hard or crunchy foods and avoid brushing the extraction site. Your mouth needs time to heal, and these things could disturb it and dislodge any blog clots that form.

Contact our dental team if you have concerns or if any of these symptoms persist.
